d3 applauds Dubai Design Week’s success
d3, part of TECOM Group PJSC, welcomes the success of Dubai Design Week 2022, which concluded yesterday after six days of creative and design inspiration and discussion.
The eighth edition of the region’s leading creative festival, Dubai Design Week, attracted tens of thousands of design enthusiasts to the emirate, with attendance up 56% compared to last year. Similarly, the 9th edition of Downtown Design, the Middle East’s leading design exhibition, attracted leading design professionals, industry executives and buyers and its attendance was up 50% over last year, demonstrating the growth and prosperity of the design and creative industry in Dubai and reinforcing Dubai’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Design.
As a strategic partner of Dubai Design Week, d3 opened its 8th edition on Tuesday (8 November), bringing together 360 representatives from the design sector, including over 200 international and regional brands. The participation of over 120 designers from the UAE also demonstrated the thriving growth of the domestic creative scene.
This year’s event was all about designing for a more sustainable future under the slogan ‘Design With Impact’ and this was evident in all the exhibitions, installations, pop-ups, talks and workshops. The third d3 architectural exhibition also ran alongside all the Dubai Design Week events, showcasing local, regional and international architectural talent, again on the theme of designing for a sustainable future.
The highlight of Dubai Design Week was Downtown Design, the region’s leading design fair, which returned to the d3 waterfront. The fair showcased over 200 international and regional brands as well as designers, immersive installations and unrivalled premiere collections, and saw strong demand for luxury interior furnishings and designer creations. The event also featured a rich and exciting series of talks and panel discussions at The Forum at Downtown Design, featuring multi-award-winning interior designer Kelly Hoppen CBE, Florence-based designer Duccio Maria Gambi and renowned regional experts such as Kuwaiti architect Jassim Al Sadah.
Debuts by Stella McCartney, OBMI and Grounded Design were also presented. Also featured were a boxing-ring-like installation negotiating issues such as climate change and recycling from Bokja and Deepak Jangra’s GRIDS; a seashell waste pavilion from Fadaa Space and Design Market from FLTRD, which ran for the first time throughout the week, offering a retail experience full of domestic offerings.
The region’s first university dedicated exclusively to design and innovation, the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), and in5 Design, a knowledge creator and community start-up incubator respectively, also provided visitors with a number of meaningful experiences during the week. DIDI presented its most extensive Dubai Design Week programme to date, including an exhibition, talks and discussions, while in5 launched its permanent Atypical shop, which showcases various products developed by startups based in the design-focused innovation hub.
Dubai Design District (d3) is a global hub for creativity. Launched by TECOM Group PJSC in 2013, it is part of the group’s vision to provide creative businesses and individuals with a home to explore, experiment and reinvent the ordinary. It is home to an entire community of global, regional and domestic brands, designers, start-ups and emerging creatives defining the future of design.
