Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships welcomes Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal will make a stunning return to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (DDFTC) next month, 15 years after his last competitive appearance in the United Arab Emirates.
Nadal, the DSFTC men’s champion in 2006, last competed at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium in 2008. Since then he has established himself as one of the greatest players in the history of tennis, winning a record 22 Grand Slam titles. Nadal is currently ranked No. 2 in the world and will compete in his annual ATP 500 tournament from February 27 to March 4.
Last year was a historic one for Nadal, who is now 36 years old. At the first Grand Slam of the season in Melbourne he won his second Australian Open title and his 21st world title, beating Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer on the all-time list of Grand Slam winners. Nadal also became only the second player in history to win a double career Grand Slam. Five months later, he won his 14th French Open title, becoming the oldest winner of the tournament, and extending his unbeaten record at Roland Garros to 106 wins from 109 matches.
The men’s Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships next month is preceded by the 23rd annual WTA tournament, which will still be held a week before the ATP tournament. The women’s event takes place from February 19-25, while the 31st ATP Tour 500 takes place from February 27-March 4.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
