Emirates Robotics Competition takes place in Dubai
Dubai Future Labs (DFL), an initiative of the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), in partnership with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Khalifa University (KU), today announced the winners of the first edition of the Emirates Robotics Competition. Fifty-two teams representing 17 local and international universities registered for the competition. The organisers selected 21 teams from 12 universities and placed them in the final stage to compete in two main tests – navigation and manipulation.
During the competition, the teams had to demonstrate the capabilities of the autonomous robotic systems they developed to perform certain tasks, including moving independently, analysing the immediate environment, navigating a specific route, avoiding obstacles, and collecting and placing objects.
Shuri from Middlesex University Dubai beat 7 teams to win the Manipulation task, Robo Tigers from RIT Dubai came second and RobAuto from Heriot-Watt University Dubai came third. As for the Navigation challenge, which featured 14 university teams, Cognizance from Manipal University Dubai took first place, Piston Sparks from University of Stirling RAK came second and ACMBITS from BITS Pilani Dubai came third.
The winners were honoured at the end of the Emirates Robotics Competition, which was hosted by RIT, in the presence of Meghan Gregonis, US Consul General in Dubai, and a number of presidents and directors of local and international universities in the UAE.
The winners of the Emirates Robotics Competition were selected according to a number of criteria established by a panel of judges. The judging panel included Mohammad Al Shamsi, CEO, RoboHitec; Dr Vinicius Goncalves, Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, New York University Abu Dhabi; Dr Rauf Fareh, Associate Professor, University of Sharjah; Dr. Hamad Karki, Associate Professor, Khalifa University; Mohamed Aboud, Vice President, Membership Development, University of Dubai; Maita Al Mhairi, R&D, Dubai Police; Ahmad Al Attar, Robotics Researcher, Dubai Future Labs; and Omar Al Hammadi, Robotics Engineer, Dubai Future Labs.
