90 prestigious number plates to be auctioned in Dubai

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has announced a new auction for 90 exclusive car number plates. The auction is scheduled to take place on March 18 and is currently accepting bids from prospective bidders.

In 2022, the department was able to sell premium number plates with a total value of over AED 37.32 million (US$ 10.16 million). The 112th auction will see elite AA 20, AA 15 and R 76 number plates among others going under the hammer. For example, the face value of AA 20 will be AED 1.8 million.

The three-digit number plates will be auctioned at a starting price of AED 240,000. Register for the auction can be done online or at the department’s customer service centres in Umm Ramul, Deira and Al Barsha districts. A deposit of AED 25,000 must be provided at the time of registration.

Any motorist can purchase any number of plates, but must pay in full for the lot won within 10 working days – otherwise the deposit will be forfeited and the participant will be added to the non-paying list.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority’s licensing agency earns millions of dirhams from the sale of high-end number plates – both online and through public auctions. Some bidders use them not only to boost their egos but also as a lucrative investment, while others use them to support the authority’s charitable initiatives.

“Such state insignia is in demand from passionate customers for whom the numbers symbolise important events in their lives. Auctions are also important for the department as they enable it to cater to the needs of a wide range of clients,” the department said.
