Emirates Racing Authority launches ‘Racing Oscar Awards’

At the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Racing Authority, the Authority has announced the launch of the Racing Oscar Awards to recognise outstanding achievements in the country’s horse racing industry.

Sheikh Rashid Bin Dalmook Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority, said the award will include several categories in which people who have contributed to the industry but are rarely in the spotlight, such as media professionals and other unsung heroes, will be recognised. The award will also honour industry pioneers who have played a key role in developing the country’s equestrian sector and establishing it as a global leader.

Sheikh Rashid Bin Dalmook Al Maktoum added that horse racing experts will be partly involved in the voting process. The award judging procedure will meet the highest standards of transparency and integrity. The entries will be judged by an independent jury.

Racing fans and media representatives will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process.

The prize is divided into several categories covering different areas of horse racing. The award will recognise the owner, trainer and jockey who have won the champion of the season.

The Racing Oscar Awards also include the ‘Founders Award’, which recognises local racing founders who have left an indelible legacy in the industry, and the ‘Unsung Heroes Award’, which aims to recognise specific individuals working behind the scenes at racecourses, during racing or in the stables. The initiative also includes the Pat Smullen Exceptional Riding of the Season Award.

Nominations also include the Beginner’s Award, which is for owners who own fewer than six horses, and the Rising Jockeys Award.

The Racegoer’s Award recognises fans of the sport and the Best Initiative Award aims to recognise outstanding initiatives that have had a positive impact on the local racing season.

A number of awards have been given out for the media, including the ‘Best Arabic and English Press Award’, the ‘Best TV Coverage Award’, an award dedicated to digital media and the ‘Best Social Media Award’. In addition, the Best Picture Award will be given for the best picture taken at one of the country’s racecourses and published on social media with the hashtag (#Oscar_Racing – #ERAOscar).
