Meta and UAE Gender Balance Council discuss cooperation

The UAE Gender Balance Council hosted Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Meta, a global leader in digital innovation and social media platforms, and discussed collaboration and partnerships between the two parties.

The meeting began with Her Excellency Mona Al Marri welcoming Sheryl Sandberg, who was visiting the region for the first time, and praising her extensive efforts to support women’s leadership around the world, saying: “Cheryl was delighted to meet Emirati women leaders and learn about their experiences in supporting women, and we congratulate Meta on opening a regional headquarters in Dubai Internet City.”

Her Excellency stressed that gender balance, equal opportunities and easy access to services are among the core principles on which the UAE was founded, and the UAE Gender Balance Council was established in 2015 to further develop this process and accelerate achievements in this area.

These efforts have been realized, and in recent years the UAE has led the region in competitiveness indicators and in relevant global reports, most recently in the World Bank’s Women, Business and Law 2021 report, receiving a full score (100 points) in five areas: freedom of movement, work, wages, entrepreneurship and retirement. Among other notable achievements, the UAE leads the region and rises to eighteenth place in the world for gender equality in a UN Development Program report published in 2020. These achievements are the result of the unlimited support provided by the wise leadership and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, President of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood and Supreme Chair of the Family Development Fund for Gender Balance, and the extensive efforts of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, which have contributed to significant progress both internally and externally.

Her Excellency Mona Al Marri added that Emirati women have made tangible achievements in leadership positions in various fields, including space, artificial intelligence, advanced technology, innovation and future sectors, and have made significant contributions to various areas of social and economic development.

Sheryl Sandberg praised the UAE’s efforts to support women and their world-leading position on gender balance, adding that it is one of the most inspiring and globally recognized experiences in harnessing women’s capabilities to achieve significant sustainable development at all levels, saying: “We are delighted that Emirati women occupy some of the most prestigious positions and succeed in various fields, including technology and artificial intelligence.”

She added: “Today I am pleased to meet with ministers and women leaders and exchange views and ideas about what women can achieve in light of the growing global trend to rely on artificial intelligence and the virtual world, which Meta is currently focusing on through its various applications. We are also pleased that Meta and the UAE Gender Balance Council share a common vision in supporting inclusive societies and the Sustainable Development Goals, and we deeply appreciate the efforts of the Council, led by Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to support women and gender balance around the world.
