Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2023 declared open

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announces the launch of the 3rd Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2023, the first of its kind in the field of self-driving transport. The competition is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council. This edition of the competition will focus on self-driving buses.

The RTA has opened registration for the competition from Monday 30 May 2022 on its dedicated website www.sdcongress.com. Finalists will be announced in October this year and winners will be announced in October 2023 during the World Congress on Self-Driving Transport in Dubai 2023. The candidates will compete for a $2.3 million cash prize.

The competition is part of the RTA’s ongoing efforts to support Dubai’s leading role in self-driving transport and its commitment to the government’s vision of turning 25% of all trips in Dubai into driverless travel by 2030.

The 3rd edition of the congress is characterised by a new competition format in the field of self-driving buses. This highlights the RTA’s desire to support the Dubai government’s pioneering efforts and expand the use of autonomous technology across the board. Leading companies have been awarded $2 million and local academics $300,000.

All local and international companies are eligible to apply in the Leading Companies category, provided the company is registered in its country of origin or locally and works in the development or operation of self-driving buses. The Local Science category includes all universities, institutes and research centres in the UAE with an interest in autonomous technology research and development of relevant models.
