MBRU honours the “Class of Khalifa” at a historic graduation ceremony

The Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) last night celebrated the graduation of the “Class of Khalifa” at a historic ceremony at the Dubai Opera House. The event was attended by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Academic Health Corporation. 

The “Class of Khalifa” included the first cohort of graduates from the Medical College, College of Nursing and Midwifery and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Programme, as well as a new cohort of graduates from the Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dentistry postgraduate programmes.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum congratulated the “Class of Khalifa” and expressed pride in their achievements, stressing that the class, which proudly bears the name of the late His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will follow his wise vision and be inspired by his legacy.

His Highness stressed that with the establishment of Dubai Academic Health Corporation, the health sector in Dubai is experiencing a significant leap forward through the integration of medical education, healthcare and research. This integration will provide graduates with a nurturing environment that will enable them to achieve better health outcomes for members of society.

His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum highlighted the valuable role that MBRU plays in training qualified healthcare professionals to continuously improve the quality of healthcare services and prepare for the future. His Highness expressed confidence that today’s graduates will contribute to strengthening the health sector in line with the vision of the country’s leadership. He also stressed the importance of the sector in light of the challenges the world has faced in recent years. His Highness urged the “Class of Khalifa” to continue their educational journey by putting patient health at the forefront of everything they do.

Her Excellency Dr Raja Al Gurg, Member of the Board of Directors of Dubai Academic Health Corporation, delivered the opening speech on behalf of MBRU Rector His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, encouraging the graduates to use their experience and knowledge in advancing health, medical education and research to promote health and serve humanity.

In his welcome address, Dr Amer Sharif, president of MBRU and CEO of Dubai Academic Health Corporation, thanked the leadership whose exceptional support and trust have played a major role in the university’s development and growth. He also praised the tireless efforts of students, the MBRU team, the university’s academic partner, Queen’s University Belfast, and all MBRU friends, partners, supporters and donors who have believed in the university’s vision and contributed to realising its goals.

The “Class of Khalifa” consists of 108 graduates, including 40 from the first cohort of the Medical College Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme and 54 from Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dentistry, who have completed Masters degrees in various dental specialties. The cohort of graduates also included the first cohort of MSc in Biomedical Sciences and the first cohort of MSc in Cardiovascular and Paediatrics at the College of Nursing and Midwifery.

This cohort also included the first graduates of Al Jalila Children’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Programme, run in academic partnership with MBRU. The programme is accredited by the Saudi Medical Specialties Commission.

The first cohort of Kuwaiti dental professionals were also honoured during the ceremony. The graduates were trained at MBRU as part of an agreement with the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialisation.

MBRU was established on 9 June 2016 by decree of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Within six years, MBRU has become one of only seven universities in the UAE to receive high credentials accreditation from the Ministry of Education. It has produced more than 800 peer-reviewed publications, more than 200 graduates, and currently offers 18 programmes in various medical specialties.
