UAE’s first Waqf to support women and children

The Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation , in cooperation with the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, has launched the UAE’s first waqf aimed at supporting women and children.

The Waqf, a Shariah-compliant charitable trust, aims to generate sustainable income to promote the care and rehabilitation of women and children and meet their needs by providing shelter and protection as well as direct support in line with international human rights principles. As a key project of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, the Waqf also provides free services to children of different nationalities across the UAE in line with the foundation’s inclusive ethos.

The housing project at Al-Warkaa in Dubai, which serves as a hub for the services provided by the Waqf, was inaugurated at an event attended by senior officials including H.E. Abdullah Mohammed Al-Basti, Secretary General of the Dubai Executive Council; H.E. Ali Mohammed Al-Mutawa, Secretary General of the Waqf and Juvenile Foundation; H.E. Ahmed Darwish Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Board of Dubai Foundation for Women and Children; H.E. Sheikha Saeed Al Mansoori, Acting Director-General of Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, as well as members of the Board and representatives from the two Foundations.

H.E. Abdullah Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary General of Dubai Executive Council, said that the humanitarian initiative reflects the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to provide protection and care for vulnerable segments of society, especially women and children, and the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, to ensure a high standard of living for all segments of society. He said initiatives that improve the level of care and support services provided to vulnerable segments of society play a vital role in promoting the growth, prosperity and well-being of society.

His Excellency expressed gratitude and appreciation for the support services provided by the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation, which have significantly contributed to advancing Dubai’s humanitarian goals, including empowering women, caring for children and equipping people with the skills and resources needed to create a brighter future.

His Excellency Essa Abdullah Al Ghurair, Chairman of Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation, said the opening of the new wakf is in line with the Dubai government’s strategy to take care of women and children. Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation aims to strengthen women’s participation in society and provide support through sustainable investment projects, which strengthen the stability and security of society, he added.

His Excellency Ali Al Mutawa reiterated the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation’s commitment to actively participate in various philanthropic initiatives to support all segments of society. According to him, women and children are some of the social groups that the Foundation pays special attention to. Al Mutawa further stated that since its inception, the Foundation has contributed in supporting women and children in collaboration with many institutions and centres specialising in sponsorship, rehabilitation, skill development and integrated care for children and women according to their needs so that they can participate in social development.

H.E. Ahmed Darwish Al Muhairi thanked the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation for its role in implementing the project, which will support the programmes of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children. He stressed that it was the responsibility of all concerned to protect this part of society. Close cooperation between various foundations and organisations is vital to enable them to live a dignified life, have a healthy family and participate in various spheres of life and create a better future for the nation, he added.

Her Excellency Sheikha Saeed Al Mansouri, Acting Director General of Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, said that the foundation’s aim to provide protection and support services for women and children reflects the commitment of the country’s leadership to the welfare of vulnerable segments of society and the country’s commitment to provide social services consistent with international human rights standards and principles.

Dubai’s Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation works to enhance the role of endowments in the social and economic development of Dubai and to grow the humanitarian, cultural, educational, health and research sectors. At the end of 2021, the Foundation’s total number of registered endowments reached 761, representing a total value of AED 7.71 billion.
