Dubai Schools Games unite 220 schools

For the first time ever, all public and private schools in Dubai have the opportunity to compete against each other in team and individual sports in the Dubai Schools Games, an initiative launched by the Dubai Sports Council. Participation is free for all schools and pupils and to date, 220 schools from across the emirate have registered. This year, we are delighted to offer our schools and students 22 different sports over 90 days spanning the entire school year.

Dubai Schools Games is proud to announce a new partnership with Liv. as title sponsor for this year and the series will now be called Liv. Dubai Schools Games.

Liv. – a product of Emirates NBD – is the first lifestyle-only digital bank. The sponsorship will allow DSG to grow, increasing the number of sports on offer and hence the number of students and schools competing at Dubai’s best venues. Liv. are delighted to embark on this journey together, investing in youth empowerment through sport and development.

Ahmed Salem Al Mahri, Director of Sports Development Department at Dubai Sports Council, said: “Organising the course comes as part of the Dubai Sports Council’s efforts to develop sports in the school sector and is a testament to the key role that schools play in the development of the sports movement in the country as the foundation of the right sports pyramid, from which promising talents emerge to support clubs and teams and lead them to the podiums of honour. In various international fora, where school sports tournaments represent the first foundational stations in the selection and development of sports talent before joining clubs, the board also aims to raise awareness in schools through a course on the importance of sports and physical activity as a way of promoting physical and mental health and well-being for all.”

Alongside Liv. as title sponsor, DSG has many other fantastic partners on board this year with Mai Dubai as aquatic partner, GO Sports as presentation partner and Aster Clinics as medical partner. Liv. Dubai Schools Games is grateful for the support of these partners and the opportunity to make competitive sport available to all school children in Dubai.

Tom Foley, general manager of GO Sport Middle East, said: “We are proud to partner with Dubai Schools Games and work together towards our shared goal of enabling young people and their respective communities to achieve their full potential through the power of sport.”

A steering committee made up of representatives from various public and private school programmes has been re-appointed for the upcoming season to ensure equal opportunities across the spectrum of education and create an inclusive playing field for all 5,000 participants registered so far.

James Bedford, chairman of the Dubai Schools Games Steering Committee, said: “This young initiative, supported by the Dubai Sports Council, is essential to give students from all our schools the opportunity to compete in the sports they enjoy and play against students from other schools and different backgrounds. This will be invaluable in helping to develop these pupils and their sporting endeavours during their time at school.  In addition, through the talent identification measures we have at all competitions, who knows, we may be able to identify and help develop the next Olympian.”
