Robotics and Automation Program launched in Dubai

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of Dubai Executive Council and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Dubai Future Foundation, announced the launch of the ‘Dubai Robotics and Automation (R&A) Program’, designed to encourage the development, testing and implementation of R&A and accelerate its application in key economic sectors.

The programme was launched during His Highness’ visit to Dubai Future Labs, an applied research and development centre specialising in robotics and artificial intelligence. The new initiative will enhance Dubai’s regional and global leadership and reinforce its reputation as a city with one of the highest levels of future technology readiness in the world.

Spearheaded by the Dubai Future Foundation, the Robotics and Automation Program, comprising five key initiatives, will seek to accelerate research and development in five areas. The programme will provide 200,000 robots over the next 10 years to improve efficiency and productivity in various sectors, including services, logistics and industry, and to enhance the competitiveness of Dubai’s economy.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed stressed that advanced infrastructure and a talented workforce give Dubai many competitive advantages in this fast-growing global industry. The Emirate will focus on developing R&D in five major sector areas – manufacturing and production; consumer services and tourism; healthcare and connected mobility; and logistics.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan ordered the allocation of laboratories for R&A technology development, support relevant research, testing, development, experimentation and integration, provide a favourable platform for collaborative projects, create prototypes and engage the public to learn about innovative products.

His Highness stressed the importance of equipping local talent and developing companies with advanced tools and skills that are expected to be in demand in the future, and developing training programmes in collaboration with public and private entities, universities and research centres at local and global levels.

All initiatives to be organised and launched under the Robotics and Automation Program will be overseen by the Dubai Council for Robotics and Automation, composed of representatives from the public and private sectors and academia.

The implementation of the Dubai Robotics and Automation Program supports the development of various vital and promising sectors in Dubai, including transport, space, healthcare, education, artificial intelligence and others.

The Dubai Robotics and Automation Program is based on three pillars – governance, R&D support, and technology deployment and utilisation. Under the governance pillar, the programme seeks to develop structural support mechanisms to create and maintain an optimal environment for R&D development, institutionalise cooperation among R&D developers, create an enabling legal and regulatory environment, formulate standards and create a comprehensive knowledge base. Under the second pillar, the Programme will seek to support research and development, increase funding in key areas, maximise the participation of local talent and increase the pool of professionals specialising in robotics and automation research and development.

Under the third pillar, the Dubai Robotics and Automation Program will help industry adopt and utilise technology, reduce the cost of implementing robotics, institutionalise R&A investment cooperation, support the integration of R&A systems, ensure public acceptance of new technology and increase the rate of adoption of robotic technology.
