THE LOOP: Dubai’s climate-controlled thoroughfare

Dubai has announced the construction of a 93-kilometre climate-controlled thoroughfare for walking and cycling called THE LOOP. It is expected to be used by up to 3 million people on foot and two-wheelers.

The project was announced by sustainable architecture firm URB. Thanks to it, residents and visitors to the emirate will be able to move around the city on foot or by bicycle throughout the year and not suffer from the summer heat.

According to Dubai’s 2040 development plan, more than 80% of the emirate’s residents will commute to work by bicycle. THE LOOP project will be powered by renewable energy and the transport will also produce no emissions.

The construction of the 20-minute city is the new phase of Dubai’s ambitious urban development plan, which runs until 2040. As part of its implementation, residents will be able to meet 80% of their daily needs by travelling to them in 20 minutes: on foot, by bicycle or by environmentally friendly bus.

For these purposes, 55% of the Emirate’s population will have to live within 800 metres of a public transport or metro station. It is around these that integrated service centres with all the necessary facilities will be created.

The 20-minute accessibility city will comprise four major centres. The district centre will be in the neighbourhood, a five-minute walk from where most of the district’s residents live. It will include retail shops, a local mosque, a smart police station and a district park.

The community centre will be a 10-minute walk or bike ride away. It will house a nursery, playground, health centre, primary school, community park, retail space and a Friday mosque.

The district centre will be reachable within 15 minutes on foot by bicycle or bus. They will include a secondary school, a health centre, a co-working centre, a district park and a shopping centre.

Finally, the sector centre will be within 20 minutes of most people in the area – accessible by bike or bus.

The sector centre can be reached in 20 minutes on foot, by bike or by bus. It will consist of a public service centre and library, a festive prayer area, a hospital, a police station and civil defence area, a co-working hub and a park.
