Dubai to take care of motorbike couriers’ rest areas
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority plans to provide new recreational areas for motorbike couriers working for delivery services. The authority has issued a public tender for the project.
The rest stops for motorcycle couriers will be located in three areas: the first on Sheikh Zayed Road, near Festival Plaza shopping mall, the second near Al Murakabat 22, and the third in the industrial zone – Ras Al Khor 2.
At the stops, couriers will be able to avail of vehicle maintenance services, refuelling, as well as a snack and a break.
Currently, there are 2,891 logistics companies operating in Dubai providing order delivery services. Compared to 2021, their number has increased by 48.3%. Not to be forgotten are the 36 online platforms also operating in this segment.
In December 2022, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority announced plans to equip new comfortable parking areas for heavy goods vehicle drivers. They will have the capacity to park around 500 trucks and will be equipped with a host of amenities.
These will include restrooms for truckers, repair shops, restaurants and cafes, administrative buildings, prayer rooms, driver training centres, clinics, pharmacies, currency exchange facilities and other amenities.
The authority has awarded one contract to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and two contracts to Almutakamela Vehicle Testing and Registration to build integrated truck parking areas totalling 226,000 square metres.
According to the authority, trucks in Dubai make more than 300,000 trips, carrying approximately 1.5 million tonnes of cargo per day. The parking areas will be located near Al Maktoum International Airport, on Mohammed bin Rashid Highway, as well as near the entrance to Dubai Industrial City and near the Al Thai racecourse.
