DEWA Sat-2 launch into orbit
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) invites the public to watch the live broadcast of the launch of its second nanosatellite, DEWA Sat-2. The Remote Sensing Nanosatellite 6U will be launched on Wednesday, 12 April 2023, at 10:30am UAE time. The nanosatellite will be launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Force Base Vandenberg in California, USA.
The DEWA SAT-2 nanosatellite was designed and developed at the DEWA Research and Development Centre at Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in collaboration with NanoAvionics of Lithuania. DEWA-SAT2 is equipped with a high-resolution camera (4.7 m), which will be used for Earth observation missions. The high-resolution camera provides continuous line-by-line scanning of images in 7 spectral bands from an orbit of about 500 km. The new satellite is also equipped with infrared capabilities for measuring greenhouse gases.
The new satellite will improve the efficiency of DEWA’s power generation, transmission and distribution units by monitoring solar power plants and improving the accuracy of power generation forecasts. This will be achieved by predicting weather conditions, sea water temperature and salinity and monitoring power lines. In addition, the satellite will help to detect water leaks and detect any changes in infrastructure, further optimising DEWA’s operations.
Live streaming can be watched on DEWA’s website (www.dewa.gov.ae) or SpaceX website https://www.youtube.com/@SpaceX
