Dubai Marathon returns for 23rd edition

The Dubai Marathon will return for its 23rd edition on Sunday 7 January 2024.

The first and oldest international marathon in the Middle East will once again feature the 4km, 10km and the classic 42.195km marathon distances. Registration for participants is already open on the official website (dubaimarathon.org).

The announcement comes just weeks after the Dubai Marathon returned to the UAE sports calendar for the first time since January 2020.

“We thank the Dubai Sports Council for their support and now look forward to working with the relevant government organisations to deliver an event that will once again bring elite athletes and amateurs alike to the city centre,” said race director Peter Connerton.

The Dubai Marathon 2024 will again be held under the auspices of the Dubai Sports Council and organisers will also work with the Dubai Police, Dubai Transport Authority and Dubai Municipality throughout the year to design the routes for all three races.

“The Dubai Marathon is one of the biggest annual events in Dubai and is eagerly awaited by runners of all ages and abilities as well as participants from within and outside the UAE,” said Dubai Sports Council Secretary General H.E. Saeed Hareb.

“We will continue to work closely with the organisers to deliver another unforgettable event and we are now in the planning stages for next year.”

For event sponsor adidas, it was an unforgettable start to the marathon year as elite adidas athletes Abdisa Tola and his sister-in-law Dera Dida from Ethiopia won the men’s and women’s marathon titles respectively.

It was a superb start to his marathon career for 22-year-old Tola, with a victory time just six seconds less than that of his older brother Tamirat, who won the marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in the USA last July.

“The elite athletes again showed how comfortable they are running on the fast and flat roads of Dubai and we were delighted with the results,” added Connerton. “We congratulate both runners and look forward to their new performances in future editions of the Dubai Marathon.”
