Logos Hope floating book fair in Abu Dhabi
The world’s largest floating book fair, Logos Hope, has dropped anchor in the capital’s port of Marsa Mina, where it will welcome visitors until 4 June 2023. The renowned liner will be staying in Abu Dhabi during the International Book Fair from 22nd to 28th May.
Logos Hope is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to enrich people with knowledge and provide assistance through cultural dialogue. The liner is owned by the charitable organization GBA Ships, based in Germany (GBA stands for “Gute Bücher für Alle” – “good books for everyone”).
For over 40 years, the fair has welcomed some 50 million visitors from over 160 countries. With a length of 132 metres, a width of 21 metres and a height of 35 metres, the Logos Hope has air-conditioned halls, a reading room café, a 400-seat theatre and everything else book-loving visitors require. The ship-shop can accommodate around 800 guests at a time.
In addition to the visitors’ area, the ship has a kitchen, living quarters for the Logos Hope crew and even a school for around 30 volunteer children. Funds for the project come from three different sources: sponsors, book sales and the volunteers themselves.
The unique project is very popular and is very warmly welcomed everywhere. This unusual fair, which has been travelling the world’s seas for over 40 years, does not only aim to distribute books but also to share cultural experiences and encourage understanding between people from all over the world.
Logos Hope also promotes education by donating books and textbooks to schools, libraries, colleges and universities in developing countries and by helping to build orphanages and similar facilities.
Today, Logos Hope travels around the world offering up to 800,000 books, mostly in English and Portuguese, but also in Spanish, on a variety of topics: children’s literature, cooking, science, hobbies, self-improvement, leadership, and dictionaries.
