Beach lengths to increase fivefold in Dubai
Dubai’s beach lengths will expand by 400% by 2040, said His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of the Emirate.
While today Dubai has 21km of public beaches, this will increase to 105km within 20 years. Correspondingly, the number of restaurants, shops, playgrounds and areas for water sports will increase by 300%.
New urban projects will support the development of tourism infrastructure in the coming years. “Dubai will continue to compete with itself and become an ideal destination for tourists and residents,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid.
He said the government’s goal is to cement Dubai’s leading position as one of the world’s most beautiful and developed cities, while also maintaining its uniqueness, which is associated with success and phenomenal achievements.
Dubai Municipality has previously opened three public beaches – in Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim 1 – for night swimming. The 800-metre-long beaches have been equipped with lighting systems, making them available 24 hours a day.
In addition, the beaches have been equipped with special LED boards, which provide information about safe nighttime bathing. Lifeguards will be on duty on the beaches at night to ensure the safety of swimmers.
According to the agency, tourists do not always have time to go to the beach during the day, so it is necessary to give them the opportunity to swim at night. It will also help achieve the strategic goal of making Dubai the world’s best city for tourism and travel.
For safety reasons, the municipality recommends that beach goers only swim at night in designated areas and not enter the sea on unlit beaches. The authority also urged beachgoers to keep an eye on their children and keep cleanliness.
