MBRL celebrates first anniversary

Mohammed Bin Rashid Library (MBRL), guided by its vision of promoting cultural awareness and stimulating a passion for knowledge among future generations, is organising a series of cultural, social and recreational events, competitions and workshops for all age groups to celebrate its first anniversary on Saturday, June 17. The event will be held under the theme “‘A Year of Culture in a Whole World'”.

Over the year, MBRL has achieved a number of successes that have helped raise cultural awareness and support knowledge sharing, including the addition of nearly 120,000 books to its collection. MBRL welcomed over half a million visitors of different ages and nationalities to its facilities, services and specialized sub-libraries.

The total number of printed and electronic books has reached over 1 million titles and the number of titles and videos in the database has reached over 21 million titles. In addition, the number of books requested through the website and app was over 4,400 books, over 620,000 e-books, and 6 global databases.

The library has organised around 200 educational, cultural and training events and workshops for adults, children and families in many areas and disciplines, including the monthly Library Days and Coffee & Book events. These events contribute to the library’s vision of being a beacon of knowledge, culture and creativity.

Moreover, the library has hosted over 250 high-level delegations led by senior officials from the UAE and abroad, including delegations from Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, the Embassy of the Republic of Malta, and the Consulates of Canada, China and Malaysia. MBRL has also hosted Sultan Sharaf Al Din Idris Shah and his wife, the wives of several UAE ambassadors, as well as the directors of the Spanish El Escorial Library, the Library of Alexandria, the Arab Foundation for Arts and Culture (AFAC), the New York Public Library, the Science Museum in London, etc. The library has also hosted numerous school and university delegations for library tours and unique and enriching experiences of its intellectual treasures.

As part of its efforts to expand and strengthen collaborative partnerships with public and private organisations, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation has signed several partnerships, strategies and agreements, including with Etisalat by e& group, MBRL Gold Partner, and Zayed University. The library is also looking to expand future collaborations with local and international organisations.

More than 100,000 books have been donated to the library by publishers, writers, authors, official delegations and consulates from the UAE and abroad. The books relate to literature, social sciences, culture, translations and many other fields, as well as over 2,200 rare and valuable titles. All these books add up to a treasure trove of knowledge for the library, consisting of more than 70 languages.

Special events

The library will mark its anniversary with a series of events including comic book exhibition, cartoon shows, piano performances, intellectual games, poetry readings, singing, book club, and performances by the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The festivities will also include interactive activities for young library patrons, such as a poetry and piano demonstration for children.

In addition to activities and entertainment, the celebration at MBRL will include workshops on learning to draw, making glass basins, making podcasts, iPhone photography and recycling. The Disney film The Jungle Book will be screened, as well as an evening of Arabic poetry, storytelling, watercolour painting and a document restoration workshop.
