UAE approves National Sports Strategy

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved and endorsed the UAE National Sports Strategy 2031 presented by the Cabinet. Among its objectives are to popularise sports, attract investment in the industry and develop the industry as a whole.

Minister of Education, Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, announced the launch of the UAE Committee for Elite Sports and High Performance Sports, whose tasks will include developing sports infrastructure, mentoring talented athletes and raising the profile of Emirati sports both at home and on the global stage.

The UAE’s first comprehensive national sports strategy for 2031 is based on three pillars: engaging residents in sports and active lifestyles, developing sports talent and success at the professional level, and supporting sports facilities.

A number of initiatives will be implemented as part of the strategy, such as developing the professional skills of sector specialists, finding new talented athletes in schools, updating the methodology of sports education and creating a sound legal framework in terms of sports legislation. In addition, one of the main thrusts is to increase the percentage of people involved in various sports to 71% of the country’s population.

The committee’s actions take on particular significance in the run-up to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Twenty-two talented Emirati athletes have already been selected by the committee to participate in a comprehensive training programme for the Olympic Games.

The strategy will be implemented gradually in three phases until 2031. The Government believes that the National Strategy will help the United Arab Emirates bring the sports sector to an internationally competitive level.
