Zayed National Museum to be opened in Abu Dhabi
Construction of a new cultural attraction, the Zayed National Museum, is well underway in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The new museum will join the collection of cultural institutions on Saadiyat Island.
The opening of the Zayed National Museum is, without doubt, one of the most anticipated events for residents and visitors of Abu Dhabi. The scale of the building can now be seen by all visitors to Saadiyat Island passing by the construction site.
The architectural structure, designed by British architects Foster and Partners, resembles the plumage of a falcon – the national symbol of the UAE. The buildings include several atriums, the largest of which will be 123 metres high.
The museum will feature six permanent gallery spaces, and the atriums will include shops and cafes. A landscaped garden will also be laid out for visitors.
The museum will show the life of the founding father of the UAE Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the history of the Arabian tribes and the social and economic reforms of the Arab state. The British Museum, which is due to sign a 10-year agreement with the new museum, will be donating a number of items to it.
Until its opening, the Zayed National Museum will donate AED 1 million a year to support research on UAE culture and history. Applications for the grant can be submitted until July 15, 2023, and recipients will be named in September 2023. The grant programme is scheduled to run until 2026.
In 2022, Abu Dhabi officials also unveiled plans to build a natural history museum that will showcase the most unique natural world has ever existed.
Its visitors will be able to travel back in time 13.8 billion years, during which they will be able to better understand and reassess the prospects for a sustainable future of the Earth. The museum is scheduled to be completed by 2025.
