Smart pedestrian crossings in Dubai
As part of a programme to improve road safety, 14 intelligent pedestrian crossings have been put into operation in Dubai.
The algorithms of the artificial intelligence system are designed to track vehicles or other road users approaching the pedestrian crossing. Such a system warns drivers in advance about the need to reduce speed, significantly reducing the risk of accidents.
The crosswalks are equipped with a high-speed 5G connection, which enables comprehensive collection of traffic data in a remote mode.
The implementation initiative was proposed by DSO Free Zone in partnership with Derq, a leading developer of artificial intelligence technology for road traffic. The platform underwent extensive testing for two years prior to implementation.
The representative of the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, Muammar Al Qateeri, said that thanks to the partnership with Derq, it will be possible to improve the level of pedestrian safety, and achieve the status of the “Smartest City” for Dubai.
A major nationwide road project aimed at eliminating accident hotspots and improving pedestrian safety was unveiled in the UAE on Tuesday.
Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Al Mazroui said that the project will use interactive warning systems on routes where accidents are frequent, and add more pedestrian crossings.
As previously reported, Abu Dhabi Police launched a system in May to alert drivers to bad weather and traffic accidents. It uses coloured lights: blue and red lights that flash simultaneously to signal a road accident, while yellow warns of bad weather – fog, rain or dust storms. The alerts are solar-powered, and are visible from up to 200 metres away at any time of day.
