Smart Farm on roof of the house
A UAE resident named Maha Al Muhairi has turned the roof of her house into a smart farm. The talented inventor grows organic vegetables and herbs all year round without having an engineering degree or agricultural experience.
Ms Al Muhairi started her green experiments by entering a science competition while studying in Dubai. Her first invention was a “smart fridge” in which she can grow different varieties of vegetables in just 10-15 days.
The success of the smart fridge later led to the development of a smart farm and a smart planter (Smart Planter). Ms Al Muhairi spent several years developing the Smart Planter and was granted a patent for two years. “The Smart Planter, created from 1,045 yoghurt containers, turns plastic cups into a sophisticated agricultural tool.
It consists of two tiers: a base filled with water and a space for seedlings. The planter can be made in different sizes and will easily fit even on a small balcony. It effectively supports plant growth for one to four weeks, without the use of fertiliser, and its mobile design makes it easy to move it to another location when needed.
According to Ms Al Muhairi, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had more time to focus on her own farm. She grew lettuce, arugula, basil, parsley, mint, tomatoes, aubergines and cucumbers. The experiment was remarkably successful and helped her gain valuable agricultural knowledge and experience.
Now the UAE inventor has achieved complete self-sufficiency in fresh vegetables and herbs for herself and her family of 10. She also owns a private farm where she grows produce for sale.
