Dubai residents can see Picasso’s masterpiece
Residents and visitors to Dubai have a unique chance to see Picasso’s painting ‘Woman with a Clock’. The famous work is on display at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) at Sotheby’s Dubai. This is a rare opportunity for art lovers and collectors to see one of the most significant works of the twentieth century. The estimated value of the painting is more than US$ 120 million.
The owner of the painting since 1968 was Emily Fisher Landau. For more than five decades, the work of Pablo Picasso hung above the mantelpiece in her home in New York. The Picasso’s painting depicts Marie-Therese Walter, the artist’s “golden muse” and the subject of many of his most accomplished portraits. The work is dated 1932.
After the Dubai exhibition ends, the rare painting will travel to Hong Kong and London before returning to New York to be auctioned.
According to Salem Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture and Youth of the United Arab Emirates, the UAE is deeply grateful to Sotheby’s for choosing the Emirates as the first stop for the Picasso masterpiece, which after 50 years is being exhibited outside the US for the first time. Endeavours such as this help connect local communities to the international art world and help strengthen the cultural and creative ecosystem. It is a way to inform and educate the younger generation of artists about the power of creativity and its value.
It is worth noting that, over the years, Sotheby’s has continued to showcase the best of the best of art in the UAE. In 2020, Sotheby’s Dubai exhibited an extremely rare Botticelli Renaissance painting, which subsequently sold for a record US$ 92.2 million. At the time, it was the most expensive painting the auction house had ever brought to the Middle East.
Since then, Sotheby’s Dubai gallery has exhibited the best works by artists such as Boetti, Wassily Kandinsky, Andy Warhol and many others.
