Dubai resident plans to break world record
A Dubai resident is making final preparations ahead of a 600 kilometre bike ride from Saudi Arabia to the UAE to set a new Guinness World Record and raise AED 1 million for cancer treatment.
Jimmy Wright, 39, originally from Australia, will attempt to break the current world record of 1 day 17 hours and 47 minutes for the first time. Mr Wright said all funds raised will go to the Al Jalila Foundation, which is dedicated to helping children suffering from cancer.
“My main goal is not just to break the Guinness record by cycling from KSA to Ras Al Khaimah, but to raise awareness and funds for the treatment of children,” said Jimmy, adding, “This endeavour gives me the opportunity to personally help young patients.
It is learnt that Jimmy’s wife, Abby, was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and only recently beat the dreaded disease. It was during this time that Jimmy decided to do something for others, and came up with the idea of a fundraising project.
“To prepare for this extraordinary challenge, I went through a rigorous three-month training programme. This regime involved a carefully considered combination of long journeys and high-intensity exercise. This approach was critical to increasing my fitness and endurance to break the record,” shared Jimmy.
“I aim to raise AED 1 million, which will help approximately 20 children. It is important to emphasise that every coin we raise will go exclusively towards medical treatment, ensuring that these children get the help they need,” he added.
Jimmy Wright will embark on the record-breaking journey next week. “In the most difficult moments of this journey, I will have the support of my family. My wife has courageously battled cancer and her unwavering strength, as well as the faith of my children, will be a powerful mental and emotional foundation to help me keep pedalling.”
