Large-scale transport project to be implemented in Dubai

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has announced plans to build five flyovers on one of the key thoroughfares, Al Khail Road. The AED 700 million road project will help to eliminate traffic congestion and reduce travelling time for motorists by 30%.

The road works will affect five neighbourhoods: Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair and Jumeirah Village Circle. Al Khail Road is one of Dubai’s key transport corridors. The six-lane highway starts from the Business Bay Crossing interchange and bridge and extends to Mohammed bin Zayed Highway.

The project will increase the capacity of not only Al Khail Road but also the roads running parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road, Mohammed bin Zayed Road and E611. Al Khail Road was upgraded in 2012, with roundabouts turned into flyovers.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has previously awarded a Dh322 million contract to reconstruct Umm Suqeim Street, one of the emirate’s key thoroughfares. The work will be carried out from Al Khail Road (E44) to E311 (Mohammed bin Zayed Highway) and will increase the capacity of the D63 (Umm Suqeim Street) by reconstructing this section.

The project aims to meet the needs of Dubai’s growing population. The motorway’s capacity will increase to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions and the journey time between the two highways will be reduced from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes.

In October 2023, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority announced the award of a contract for the major reconstruction of Hessa Street. The project covers a 4.5 kilometre stretch from the E311 highway to Al Khail Road. The cost of the modernisation is AED 689 million (US$ 187 million).

As part of the reconstruction, the number of lanes on Hessa Street will be doubled, increasing capacity to 8,000 vehicles per hour in each direction. The project includes the modernisation of four major intersections, which will significantly reduce congestion and ease traffic from business districts to residential areas and back.
