Multifunctional cycle track to be built in Dubai

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to build a multifunctional track designed for cyclists, scooters and pedestrians. It will connect Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills via Hessa Street, and will also include two bridges: over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.

The track will be 13.5km long and 4.5 metres wide (a 2.5 metre wide track for cyclists and scooters and a 2 metre wide track for pedestrians). It will serve 12 residential, commercial and educational areas, and will connect Dubai Internet City metro station and other locations in the vicinity. The capacity of the track is estimated at 5,200 users per hour.

The bridge over Sheikh Zayed Road will be 528 metres long and the bridge over Al Khail Road will be 501 metres long. Both will be 5 metres wide (3 metres for bicycles and scooters and 2 metres for pedestrians).

The design of the bridge over Sheikh Zayed Road embodies the concept of unity embodied in intersecting lines. The open design of the bridge will improve visibility and offer views of the neighbourhood and adjacent towers.

A design has been developed for the bridge over Al Khail Road that follows the path of sunlight, creating flowing lines and offering pedestrians and cyclists a peaceful respite from street noise.

The project aims to increase the total length of Dubai’s cycle lanes from the current 544 kilometres to 1,000 kilometres by 2030. This expansion will connect coastal neighbourhoods such as Jumeirah, Al Sufouh and Marina with outer routes in Al Qudra, Seih Al Salam and Nad Al Sheba.

The track is part of the Hessa Street improvement project. The project includes upgrading four major intersections along the street, as well as widening it from two to four lanes in each direction, doubling its capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
