Sisters from Dubai receive Ivy League diplomas

Three sisters from Dubai, who have been homeschooled all their lives, have graduated from some of the world’s best universities. The girls now have degrees from Ivy League universities, prestigious awards and a host of hobbies under their belt.

Their father Ashish Thomas, who has lived in Dubai for 37 years, said breaking his children away from the traditional method of schooling was a conscious but difficult decision for him and his wife Rekha.

The family started the children’s education with South Africa’s personalised curriculum, then switched to the American curriculum so the children could pursue higher education in the United States.

Dorothy Thomas – the second of the sisters – was recently honoured with the prestigious Richard J. Estes Award from her alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania.

The award is typically given to a graduating senior who achieves academic excellence, strives to make an impact on society, and uses his or her talents and knowledge to make a difference in the world.

Dorothy, who earned a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership with a 4.0 grade point average, said homeschooling ensured her success.

The oldest of Stephanie’s sisters, Danielle has two bachelor’s degrees from Arizona State University and Liberty University. She also has a master’s degree from Harvard University and specialises in leadership and business management.

Younger sister Darianne is currently in her final year of undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She received the 2021 President’s Award for Academic Excellence.

Due to their flexible schedules, all three girls have had the opportunity to pursue different hobbies. They enjoy painting, horseback riding and several other sports, including football. The family has also travelled extensively – visiting more than 70 countries so far – so the children can learn about different cultures.

Darianne said that although there are many stereotypes about homeschooling, she and her sisters have always participated in different activities and socialised with their peers.
