UAE residents warned of a tropical cyclone
The National Centre for Meteorology has warned residents of the United Arab Emirates of an atmospheric depression formed off the west coast of India, which could become a tropical cyclone and hit the Arabian Sea coast as early as October 14 and 15.
According to forecasters, data on the intensity and trajectory of the tropical cyclone is constantly changing. It may head towards the centre of the Arabian Sea and then towards the central coast of Oman. In the second case, the cyclone will go to the south-west and then to the island of Socotra.
Meteorologists remind that tropical cyclones are characterised by unpredictable changes in behaviour, so they are continuously monitoring the situation and will alert any changes promptly. UAE residents were urged to adhere to safety rules and refrain from spreading rumours.
Earlier, Dr Saif Jumaa Al Daheri, director of the National Operations Centre of the UAE’s National Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (NCEMA) called for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict weather risks. He said there is a need to enhance the available data capabilities to ensure effective disaster management.
Dr Al Daheri warned that future crises will become more complex and recurring due to climate change. He also spoke about the impact of the pandemic, describing it as the crisis of the century, and emphasised that the use of data is crucial in managing such complex situations.
