Dubai Police tightens traffic regulations
In a bid to improve road safety, Dubai Police is introducing new rules and expanding the number of offences for which offenders’ cars can be impounded.
The latest legislation covers 14 traffic offences that can be punished by impounding the vehicle for 14 or 30 days.
Sudden swerving causing danger to persons or property, failure to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, distraction while driving due to the use of a phone or other devices will result in the impoundment of a vehicle for 30 days.
Entering a road without making sure it is clear, reversing a vehicle causing danger to persons and property, failure to observe lane discipline, stopping in the middle of the road without reason, dangerous overtaking, unsafe driving, stopping a vehicle on the hard shoulder in non-emergency situations or overtaking other vehicles using the hard shoulder, driving a vehicle without a number plate, changing the colour of the vehicle without permission will result in the impoundment of the vehicle
These directives are the latest move by Dubai Police to combat reckless driving and reduce the number of injuries and deaths on the emirate’s roads.
It is worth recalling that in June last year, police introduced hefty fines for a number of offences. In particular, a fine of up to Dh100,000 for participating in unauthorised road races and Dh50,000 for running a red light.
The forfeiture time and release fee doubles if the motorist is caught re-offending within one year. Existing traffic fines must be paid in addition to the new fees, which were introduced solely for the release of cars impounded for traffic offences.
