Relay for Life race takes place in Sharjah
The Relay for Life (RLF) race was held in Sharjah last weekend, bringing together a large number of UAE residents in an effort to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer.
The event, organised by Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), was the largest fundraising and awareness raising event for the disease in the region. The run started at the American University of Sharjah and lasted 24 hours, during which participants completed laps around the course, supporting each other and sharing stories.
For example, Indian expat Nihad Naseeruddin cut short his honeymoon to participate in this milestone event. Last year he walked 87 kilometres during this event and this year his goal is to cover 100 kilometres. Nihad lost a childhood friend to cancer and believes that events like RLF play an important role in raising awareness about the disease.
‘My wedding was scheduled for January, but I cut short my honeymoon to make it in time for the Relay for Life,’ Nihad revealed. He noted that despite the lack of preparation due to the wedding rush, he is determined to do his best.
Nihad also emphasised that cancer has become more common and such events can encourage people to take care of their health and get regular check-ups. ‘In recent years, I have heard of colleagues and friends who have unexpectedly lost their loved ones to cancer,’ he added.
Themed areas such as the Relaxing Circle and the Glowing Circle were organised during the event, which added to the fun and allowed participants to make new acquaintances. The organisers aimed to make the event not only informative but also fun so that everyone could support each other in their fight against the disease.
The event also featured areas for children with fun rides, and participants could leave encouraging messages for people who had beaten the disease. The run came to symbolise the ongoing fight of cancer patients and the support of the community.
