Dubai Plants Over 200,000 Trees in 2024 as Part of Green Initiative
Dubai has taken significant strides in enhancing its green spaces, with the Dubai Municipality announcing the planting of more than 200,000 trees in 2024 alone. This effort is part of the emirate’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and urban beautification. On average, 600 trees are planted daily, reflecting the city’s dedication to creating a greener and more sustainable future.
In 2024, Dubai’s green zones expanded by 216,500 trees, marking a 17% increase compared to the previous year. The total area of green spaces grew by 3.9 million square meters, a 57% rise from 2023. In addition to trees, the municipality planted 5.3 million flower seedlings and decorative plants, replacing 45 million seasonal flowers.
These efforts are part of the broader Dubai Green Project, which has implemented 165 development initiatives across residential and urban areas, main and secondary roads, transportation interchanges, public parks, and family recreational spaces. The project aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors while promoting environmental sustainability.
The municipality has focused on planting native and adaptive tree species, such as Ghaf, Sidr, and Samar, which are well-suited to Dubai’s climate. Additionally, decorative species like Neem, Olive, Indian Jasmine, and various palm trees have been introduced. To further enrich the emirate’s green cover, evergreen species such as Washingtonia, Bismarckia, Poinciana, Pongamia, and Acacia franciana have been planted.
To ensure the sustainability of these green spaces, Dubai has adopted advanced agricultural technologies. One notable innovation is the use of a recycled water irrigation system, which conserves resources while maintaining the health of the plants.
Since 2011, Dubai’s green cover has doubled, reaching 52 million square meters. This remarkable growth underscores the emirate’s long-term commitment to environmental preservation and urban development. The expansion of green spaces not only improves air quality and reduces the urban heat island effect but also provides residents with more recreational areas and enhances the city’s aesthetic appeal.
Dubai’s ambitious tree-planting initiative is a testament to its vision of becoming a global leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship. By integrating advanced technologies, diversifying plant species, and expanding green spaces, the emirate is setting a benchmark for other cities worldwide. As Dubai continues to grow, its commitment to creating a greener, more livable environment remains a cornerstone of its development strategy.
The success of the Dubai Green Project highlights the importance of collaboration between government entities, residents, and businesses in achieving sustainable urban growth. With over 200,000 trees planted in 2024 alone, Dubai is well on its way to becoming a greener, more resilient city for future generations.
