UAE Joins Lunar Space Mission with Thales Alenia Space
The United Arab Emirates has taken a monumental step in its space exploration ambitions by signing a strategic agreement with Thales Alenia Space to participate in the development of the lunar Gateway station. This partnership is expected to pave the way for the first Emirati astronaut to journey to lunar orbit, marking a significant milestone in the UAE’s growing presence in the global space industry.
The agreement was formalized during a ceremony attended by high-profile dignitaries, including His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the UAE, as well as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.
Sheikh Hamdan expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing that this partnership represents a crucial step toward achieving the UAE’s space exploration goals. He highlighted that the project would usher in a new era and create opportunities for the first Arab astronaut to reach lunar orbit. The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) will lead the UAE’s efforts in this project, which is a key component of establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon and supporting future planetary missions.
Under the agreement, Thales Alenia Space will serve as a strategic partner in the development of the pressurized crew module for the lunar Gateway station. This station, part of NASA’s Artemis program, will be the first space station to orbit the Moon, providing critical support for astronauts during lunar missions.
The UAE had previously announced its involvement in the development of the lunar Gateway station in January 2024, alongside the United States, Japan, Canada, and the European Union. As part of the agreement, the UAE will take responsibility for the operation of the pressurized crew module for up to 15 years, securing the country’s permanent role in one of the largest space exploration programs in history.
The development of the pressurized crew module will be carried out in five phases: planning, design, evaluation, flight preparation, and operation. Each phase will involve setting objectives and strategies, creating detailed specifications, conducting rigorous testing, and ensuring the integration of components into the lunar Gateway station.
This collaboration underscores the UAE’s commitment to advancing its space capabilities and contributing to international efforts in space exploration. By participating in the Artemis program, the UAE is positioning itself as a key player in the next chapter of humanity’s journey to the Moon and beyond.
