Dubai Announces Ambitious Super Block Initiative
Dubai has unveiled a groundbreaking new initiative, Super Block, aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents by transforming several districts into pedestrian-friendly, green spaces. The project will focus on four key areas: Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and the creative zone of Al Quoz. The initiative aligns with Dubai’s long-term development goals outlined in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which emphasizes sustainability, community well-being, and urban innovation.
The Super Block initiative will prioritize pedestrians and cyclists, creating recreational public spaces while restricting vehicle access. This shift is designed to encourage a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle for residents and visitors alike. The announcement was made by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE. Sheikh Hamdan emphasized that the project reflects Dubai’s commitment to becoming a global leader in urban development and environmental sustainability.
The four districts selected for the Super Block initiative will undergo extensive greening efforts, with the introduction of lush landscapes, parks, and pedestrian pathways. The goal is to create vibrant, community-focused spaces where residents can enjoy outdoor activities, socialize, and connect with nature. By reducing car traffic and promoting alternative modes of transportation, Dubai aims to lower carbon emissions and improve air quality in these areas.
In addition to the Super Block initiative, Dubai continues to push the boundaries of innovation with the announcement of Therme Dubai, the world’s tallest wellness resort. Slated to open in 2028, the resort will be located in Zabeel Park and is expected to attract 1.7 million visitors annually. With a projected cost of AED 2 billion, Therme Dubai will feature a massive interactive park, the world’s largest indoor botanical garden, and a variety of wellness facilities, including thermal pools and therapeutic zones.
The 100-meter-tall resort will span 500,000 square feet and be divided into three distinct areas dedicated to health restoration, relaxation, and entertainment. Families will also have access to dedicated recreational spaces, making Therme Dubai a holistic destination for both locals and tourists.
The Super Block initiative and Therme Dubai are part of Dubai’s broader strategy to create a sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready city.
