Akash Nambiar Runs 115 Kilometers Barefoot to Save the Ocean
In an extraordinary feat of endurance and environmental activism, 36-year-old Dubai resident Akash Nambiar completed a 115-kilometer barefoot run to raise awareness about ocean conservation. The run, which began at 6 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, and concluded 17 hours later at 11 p.m., took Akash from Hatta to the bustling highways of Dubai. Along the way, he took strategic breaks every 30 kilometers to recharge and refuel.
Akash’s initiative was timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day week, a period often associated with love and affection. “While many are celebrating love this week, I wanted to remind people that loving ourselves and the world around us is equally important. Prioritizing health and caring for the environment is especially crucial in a country surrounded by incredible marine landscapes,” he shared.
The run was organized in collaboration with AZRAQ, a UAE-based non-profit organization dedicated to marine conservation. Akash, who has been running marathons across the globe for the past decade, works as an advertising manager at a European agency. Though not a professional athlete, he has completed several ultramarathons worldwide, including a 100-kilometer run from Abu Dhabi to Dubai five years ago.
Akash has been running barefoot for the past 10 years, a practice he finds more natural and environmentally friendly. “Shoes can restrict the free movement of your feet, while running barefoot supports zero carbon emissions,” he explained. This unique approach not only aligns with his eco-conscious values but also sets him apart as a runner.
The Hatta-to-Dubai run was no easy feat. Akash faced extreme heat, particularly between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., which he described as “unbearable.” Painful blisters on his feet made the final stretch incredibly challenging. “The last 25 kilometers in the city were tough due to traffic. I had to stay focused despite the pain and exhaustion,” he admitted.
Despite these hurdles, Akash persevered, driven by his commitment to the cause. While he ran alone, a support team accompanied him, providing food, hydration, and encouragement throughout the journey.
Akash’s barefoot run is more than just a physical achievement; it’s a powerful call to action. By pushing his limits, he hopes to inspire others to take small but meaningful steps toward protecting the planet. His dedication to environmental causes, combined with his passion for running, makes him a true advocate for sustainable living.
As Akash continues to champion ocean conservation, his story serves as a reminder that individual efforts, no matter how unconventional, can make a significant impact.
