Dubai Customs Intensifies Crackdown on Counterfeit Goods in 2024
Dubai Customs has made significant strides in combating counterfeit goods, conducting 54 major operations in 2024 that resulted in the seizure of 10.8 million fake branded items. These efforts are part of the emirate’s broader strategy to protect intellectual property rights and strengthen its investment climate. By curbing the circulation of counterfeit products, authorities aim to safeguard manufacturers from losses associated with piracy and fake goods.
To enhance the effectiveness of its anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy initiatives, Dubai Customs has implemented advanced training programs for its officers and inspectors. These programs equip staff with the latest skills and techniques needed to identify counterfeit goods. The department’s efforts are further bolstered by cutting-edge technologies, innovative solutions, and the integration of smart IT applications, which streamline operations and improve efficiency.
The department has also achieved remarkable progress in executing key projects. In the past year, 55 out of 84 planned initiatives were successfully completed, leading to a 5% increase in processed cargo, an 8% rise in passenger baggage inspections, and a 9% growth in passenger screenings compared to the previous period.
Dr. Abdullah Busenad, Director of Dubai Customs, emphasized that the emirate’s commercial sector is thriving in alignment with the goals outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. This ambitious plan was introduced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to solidify Dubai’s position as a global economic hub.
Dubai’s extensive logistics network, which spans numerous countries, has played a pivotal role in boosting foreign trade. In 2024, maritime cargo shipments increased by 23%, land shipments by 21%, and air cargo by 11.3% compared to 2023.
Dubai Customs has also garnered numerous prestigious international and local awards, reflecting its commitment to excellence. The department secured first place in the global Platinum Classification Index by IdeasUK, achieving the highest rating for five consecutive years. Additionally, it earned second place in the global Big Idea of the Year category for its innovative health and safety project, Safe Cabinets from Harmful Radiation. Dubai Customs continues to maintain its elite status in the 2024 Dubai Government Excellence Program, further cementing its reputation as a leader in customs innovation and efficiency.
Through its relentless efforts to combat counterfeit goods, enhance trade, and adopt advanced technologies, Dubai Customs is playing a crucial role in supporting the emirate’s economic growth and reinforcing its status as a global trade and logistics hub.
