Step Back in Time: Sharjah’s Unique Heritage Hotel Opens in Khor Fakkan
A one-of-a-kind hotel has opened in Sharjah, offering guests a chance to immerse themselves in the UAE’s rich history. Nestled in the historic village of Najd Al Meqsar in Khor Fakkan, the hotel is housed in a 100-year-old settlement, where seven traditional homes with palm-frond roofs have been meticulously restored into cozy accommodations.
Built from clay and stone, these triangular-roofed houses reflect the UAE’s cultural heritage while providing a serene escape from modern life. Perched on a mountainside, each house features a private outdoor seating area with stunning sea views. Stripping away modern luxuries like elevators and swimming pools, the hotel emphasizes simplicity, tranquility, and a deep connection to nature.
Guests can explore the nearby Al Meqsar Fortress, a nearly 300-year-old watchtower that once guarded against invaders arriving via the Indian Ocean. The fortress, along with the Al Rabi and Al Adwani towers, played a crucial role in protecting Khor Fakkan. For adventure enthusiasts, hiking trails lead to the picturesque Al Rafisah Dam. Dining is available at the Wishi restaurant, located further down the slope, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
The hotel is the result of a collaboration between Sharjah’s Mubadara (Implementation Authority) and the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). Opened less than a year ago, it stands on an archaeological site where Iron Age rock carvings have been discovered. Historical records suggest that the area was once home to a tribe that settled near a water source, developing an ancient irrigation system known as Al Falaj.
Over time, frequent floods forced the tribe to build homes higher up the mountain around Al Meqsar Fortress. At an elevation of 220 meters, 13 houses were constructed for seasonal use during the rainy season. During the Portuguese colonization of the region, many residents of Khor Fakkan migrated to Najd Al Meqsar. Today, only seven of these houses remain, carefully transformed into the hotel’s unique rooms.
The restoration of Najd Al Meqsar is part of a broader initiative led by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. In 2019, he ordered the preservation of Khor Fakkan’s historic areas, forming specialized teams and launching campaigns to study and restore the region’s ancient sites.
