Dubai’s Public Spaces to Transform into Open-Air Art Galleries

In a move to enrich the city’s visual identity and turn public spaces into artistic landmarks, Dubai Culture and the Dubai Municipality have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This initiative aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to create a sustainable, people-centric urban environment. The agreement underscores Dubai Culture’s social and cultural commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the emirate and solidifying its position as a global hub for living, working, and leisure, as well as a cultural center, creativity incubator, and talent platform.

The MoU highlights the shared commitment of Dubai Culture and the Dubai Municipality to expand collaboration, strengthen communication channels, and exchange best practices in identifying suitable locations for art installations and public artworks. This initiative will contribute to transforming Dubai into a global open-air art gallery, accessible to all. As part of the agreement, Dubai Culture will determine the number of artworks and installations to be added to public spaces annually, in line with the city’s urban development plan.

The Dubai Municipality, on the other hand, will be responsible for selecting proposed locations for these installations and coordinating with government and private entities to secure the necessary permits and licenses for the projects.

Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture, emphasized the importance of this partnership in transforming Dubai’s streets and public squares into an open-air museum. She noted that through this accessible art strategy, the authorities aim to foster a culture of innovation, support Dubai’s creative economy, expand the presence of artists in the local art scene, and promote greater artistic appreciation across the emirate.

This initiative reflects Dubai’s ongoing efforts to integrate art and culture into everyday life, making the city not only a global business and tourism destination but also a vibrant cultural capital. By turning public spaces into artistic showcases, Dubai continues to reinforce its reputation as a forward-thinking, creative, and inclusive city.
