Shahvez Khan Honored for Heroic Rescue During Floods
Dubai Police have awarded Shahvez Khan, a 28-year-old Indian audit trainee, for his courageous actions during the devastating floods that struck the city in April last year. Mr. Khan received a medal and a cash prize of 1,000 dirhams for risking his life to save five people from a sinking SUV. The award ceremony took place at the Dubai Police headquarters, where Colonel Ali Halfan Al Mansouri presented the hero with a certificate, medal, and cheque.
Shahvez Khan was overwhelmed by the recognition, describing the moment as surreal. He admitted he still finds it hard to believe what happened and humbly stated, “I just did what anyone should have done in that situation.”
The young hero wasted no time sharing the news with his family. He called his parents, who expressed immense pride in their son’s actions. Mr. Khan’s mother, who had been deeply worried about him on the day of the incident, couldn’t stop expressing her pride, saying her son had made her incredibly proud.
News of Shahvez’s bravery spread after a video of his rescue operation went viral. On April 16, as heavy rains flooded parts of Dubai, Shahvez Khan had just finished his prayers when he noticed a yellow SUV stuck in the water near the Coca-Cola Arena. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water from a height of 20 feet and used a hammer to break the vehicle’s glass roof.
“I can still see the faces of the people inside the car—panicking, banging on the windows, gasping for air,” Mr. Khan recalled. “There was no time to think; I just had to act.” Despite suffering injuries from the broken glass and the jump, he managed to rescue all five passengers—two Arabs, an Indian woman, a Filipino woman, and an Indian man—and bring them to safety.
“It was never about recognition,” the hero said. “But knowing that people remember and appreciate it means a lot to me. I hope this inspires others to always help those in need.”
Shahvez Khan’s selfless act has not only earned him accolades but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of courage and compassion in times of crisis. His story continues to inspire residents of Dubai and beyond, proving that heroism can emerge in the most unexpected moments.
