UAE Student Team Wins “Most Inspirational” Award at NASA Space Apps Challenge

A team from the United Arab Emirates has claimed the “Most Inspirational Team” award at the 2024 NASA Space Apps Challenge, a global hackathon that drew 93,000 participants from 163 countries. The Sharjah-based team, the UAE’s sole winner this year, stood out among 10,000 innovative projects for their educational initiative promoting sustainable development goals (SDGs) in high school curricula.

The Emirati team developed a framework to integrate SDGs into science lessons—covering weather, geology, and soil health—aimed at inspiring the next generation of sustainability leaders. Their solution emerged victorious after competing against 202 teams across the UAE, including entries from Dubai, Ajman, and Sharjah, as well as international contenders.

Organized in partnership with the University of Dubai and tech collaborator SPACE.TAYAR, the event challenges participants to solve real-world NASA problems in 48 hours. This year’s theme focused on the Sun’s impact on Earth, with projects ranging from web apps to animations. Teams received mentorship from space experts before presenting to judges.

The NASA Space Apps Challenge, the world’s largest space-themed hackathon, fosters collaboration and creativity. The UAE team will be honored at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland on June 4, 2025.

“This win reflects the UAE’s commitment to nurturing STEM talent and addressing global challenges through innovation,” said a team representative. The achievement underscores the nation’s growing influence in space and sustainability education.

The UAE continues to make strides in space-related fields, with this victory marking another milestone in its ambitious scientific and educational agenda.
