Dubai to Mumbai: The Ambitious Plan for an Undersea High-Speed Rail
The United Arab Emirates and India could one day be connected by an underwater high-speed rail system, according to recent discussions in Indian media. The proposed project would link Dubai and Mumbai through a revolutionary transit system beneath the Arabian Sea. However, Abdullah Al Shehi, managing director of the developing company, explained that the ambitious plan remains in its early conceptual phase and requires extensive feasibility studies before progressing further.
The undersea rail concept was initially introduced in 2018 but has recently regained attention. Al Shehi noted that while the project could significantly boost trade between the UAE and India while improving regional transportation for neighboring countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, it still needs official approvals before development can begin. No specific timeline has been established for the project’s completion.
The envisioned underwater high-speed rail would utilize advanced electromagnetic propulsion technology, enabling it to reach remarkable speeds of up to 1,000 kilometers per hour. The system would operate through concrete tunnels submerged approximately 20 to 30 meters below the sea’s surface, representing one of the most complex infrastructure endeavors ever attempted.
Beyond passenger transportation, the project could serve crucial economic functions, including facilitating oil exports from the UAE to India and transporting fresh water from Central India to the UAE. Al Shehi emphasized that such a system could transform logistics across a region encompassing about 1.5 billion people, dramatically reducing travel times and enhancing economic cooperation.
If successfully implemented, this groundbreaking infrastructure project would establish the UAE as a pivotal transportation hub for South Asia, potentially reshaping trade patterns and strengthening economic ties throughout the region. While numerous challenges remain regarding technical feasibility, financial requirements, and geopolitical considerations, the undersea rail concept represents a visionary approach to future connectivity between the Middle East and South Asia. The project’s current status remains in preliminary planning stages as developers await necessary approvals and conduct further research into its viability.
