UAE Enters Period of Intense Heat as Kanat Al Turayya Season Begins
The United Arab Emirates is bracing for a significant rise in temperatures as the Kanat Al Turayya season officially begins on April 29, according to the UAE Astronomical Society. This period marks the transition from spring heat to the peak of summer, with temperatures consistently exceeding 40°C. Known for its dry air and lower humidity levels, Kanat Al Turayya represents a critical shift in the region’s climate, signaling the dominance of summer weather patterns over the Arabian Peninsula.
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Association, explained that this season acts as a transitional phase, where the summer climate system takes hold. The period derives its name from the disappearance of the Pleiades star cluster (Al Turayya) from the night sky, a celestial event traditionally observed by Arab astronomers. The season will last until June 7, 2025, concluding when the star cluster reappears. Following this, the summer solstice will occur, marking the official start of summer as the sun’s rays reach the Tropic of Cancer.
In addition to scorching temperatures, Kanat Al Turayya brings other challenging weather conditions. Dry northwesterly winds, locally known as Al Bawareh, become more frequent, contributing to the already harsh environment. These winds often carry dust, leading to increased sandstorms that reduce visibility and impact daily life. The combination of extreme heat, low humidity, and dust storms makes this season particularly demanding for residents and outdoor workers. Authorities typically advise taking precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and being mindful of weather alerts during dust storms.
Historically, Kanat Al Turayya has been an important marker for agricultural and maritime activities in the region. Farmers and fishermen have long relied on its timing to adjust their schedules, as the intense heat and shifting winds affect crop growth and sea conditions. Today, while modern infrastructure helps mitigate some of the season’s challenges, the UAE’s rapid urbanization and expanding outdoor workforce mean that adapting to these extreme conditions remains crucial.
As the Kanat Al Turayya season progresses, residents can expect the heat to intensify further, with June and July typically being the hottest months. The UAE’s advanced cooling systems and heat safety campaigns aim to minimize discomfort, but the natural cycle of the region’s climate continues to shape daily life. This annual weather shift serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and the environment in one of the world’s most arid regions.
