UAE Issues Heatwave Guidelines as Temperatures Near 50°C

The United Arab Emirates is experiencing a sharp rise in temperatures, with mercury levels approaching 50°C in some areas. According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), the heatwave is expected to intensify in the coming days, driven by seasonal winds bringing hot, dry air across the region. Authorities have urged residents and visitors to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Key recommendations include staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, wearing light-colored cotton clothing, and using hats and sunglasses for protection. People are also advised to limit outdoor activities during peak daytime hours and ensure proper ventilation in indoor spaces. The extreme conditions coincide with the start of Kaneet Al Thuraya, a transitional weather season marking the shift from spring heat to the peak of summer.

The UAE Astronomical Society confirmed that Kaneet Al Thuraya began on April 29 and will last until June 7, 2025. This period is characterized by scorching temperatures, low humidity, and strong northwesterly winds known as Al Bawareh, which often trigger dust storms. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, explained that the season begins with the disappearance of the Al Thuraya star cluster and ends when it reappears in early June. The summer solstice will follow, marking the official start of summer as the sun reaches the Tropic of Cancer.

With the country bracing for prolonged extreme heat, officials emphasize the importance of adhering to safety measures while meteorologists monitor weather patterns closely. The combination of rising temperatures and frequent dust storms poses additional challenges, making public awareness crucial for health and safety during this harsh seasonal transition.
