UAE Unveils Ambitious Space Plans at Gitex Europe
The United Arab Emirates has announced a major leap in its space exploration ambitions, revealing plans to develop a key module for NASA’s Lunar Gateway station and send an Emirati astronaut to the Moon by 2030 as part of the Artemis missions. The historic announcement was made by Hazzaa Al Mansoori, the first Emirati to travel to space, during the Gitex Europe exhibition in Berlin.
Al Mansoori confirmed that the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) will collaborate with NASA to design and build the Crew and Science Airlock module for the Lunar Gateway, marking the UAE’s largest contribution to international space exploration to date. The airlock, critical for astronaut spacewalks and scientific experiments, is slated for completion by 2030. This aligns with the UAE’s goal to send its first astronaut to lunar orbit aboard an Artemis mission that year—a first for both the Arab world and the region.
The Lunar Gateway, a space station orbiting the Moon, will serve as a staging post for lunar surface missions and future expeditions to Mars. It will enable long-term scientific research, crewed missions, and deep-space exploration. The UAE’s involvement was formalized last year through a landmark agreement with NASA, which also secures a seat for an Emirati astronaut on an upcoming Artemis flight.
Nora Al Matrooshi, the first Arab woman astronaut, also emphasized the UAE’s expanding role in space during the event. She highlighted the country’s preparations for missions to the International Space Station, the Moon, and Mars, while underscoring the integration of artificial intelligence to analyze satellite data. This technology aids in urban planning, agricultural development, and disaster response, reflecting the UAE’s broader strategy to leverage space innovation for Earth-based challenges.
The UAE’s space program, which includes the successful Hope Probe mission to Mars in 2021, continues to position the nation as a rising leader in global space exploration. With its Lunar Gateway partnership and pioneering astronaut missions, the UAE aims to inspire regional STEM advancement and cement its role in humanity’s next chapter of space discovery.
