Dubai’s Road Upgrade to Cut Travel Time by 60%
Dubai is on the verge of completing a major road infrastructure upgrade that promises to drastically reduce travel time for residents and visitors. The project, which includes a new tunnel and improvements to the route between Al Khail Street and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, will cut journey times from 9.7 minutes to just 3.8 minutes. With a budget of 332 million dirhams, the initiative is already more than 70% complete.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), recently inspected the construction site. He emphasized that the project is part of a broader plan to develop the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor, stretching 16 kilometers from Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road. The primary goal is to enhance connectivity between four of Dubai’s key highways: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.
According to Al Tayer, the upgrades will increase the corridor’s capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, easing traffic congestion and reducing travel time by 61%. This improvement will benefit commuters traveling to and from popular areas such as Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, Dubai Hills, Arjan, and Dubai Science Park, home to over a million people.
The project involves the construction of an 800-meter tunnel with four lanes in each direction, as well as the modernization of the Umm Suqeim–Al Barsha South intersection, which will feature traffic signal optimization. The first phase of the project, completed in 2013, covered the section between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road and included two three-lane bridges in each direction.
Advanced technologies are playing a crucial role in the project’s execution. Drones are being used for site monitoring, while artificial intelligence helps track progress and efficiency metrics. These innovations have doubled on-site specialist presence and reduced inspection time by 60%. Continuous imaging systems have also improved overall monitoring efficiency by 40%.
Once finished, the upgraded infrastructure will mark another step forward in Dubai’s commitment to seamless urban mobility, ensuring faster and smoother journeys across the city.
