Abu Dhabi Set to Host Future Games 2025: Global Phygital Sports Showcase
The international spotlight turns to Abu Dhabi this December as the capital of the United Arab Emirates prepares to host the second edition of the groundbreaking Future Games. Scheduled for December 18-23, 2025, the event promises to build on the success of its inaugural tournament held in Kazan last year.
The Future Games represent a pioneering concept in global sport: phygital competition. This innovative format seamlessly merges the physical intensity of traditional athletics with the digital prowess of esports and cutting-edge VR/AR technology. Athletes compete across disciplines that demand both physical fitness and elite gaming skills.
The inaugural 2024 Games featured competition divided into five core challenges: Sport, Tactics, Strategy, Technology, and Speed. Over 2,000 athletes from across the globe converged on Kazan to compete in 21 unique phygital disciplines – 16 core events and 5 additional showcase events. Extensive preparatory test events were held in Kazan throughout 2022 and 2023 to refine the format.
Medalists at the first Games hailed from a diverse range of nations including China, India, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Spain, South Korea, the Philippines, Uruguay, Ecuador, Argentina, and Colombia, showcasing the event’s truly international appeal. The total prize pool reached an impressive $10 million USD, with phygital football and phygital basketball offering the highest individual prizes of $1.25 million each.
The UAE’s selection as host underscores its commitment to technological advancement and embracing new sporting frontiers. The nation has demonstrated significant support for the esports and gaming ecosystem, including the establishment of the UAE’s National Program for Gamers and the Higher Committee for Esports Development. Abu Dhabi 2025 is poised to be a major milestone in the evolution of phygital sports on the world stage.
