Sheikh Mohammed Breaks Ground on Landmark Dubai Metro Line

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, marked a historic moment on Monday as he laid the foundation stone for the future Emaar Properties station, the centerpiece of Dubai’s transformative new Blue Line metro extension. This ambitious project heralds a significant leap forward in the emirate’s transportation network, promising enhanced connectivity and convenience for residents and visitors alike, with operations slated to commence on September 9, 2029.

The ceremony unveiled the stunning architectural design for the Emaar Properties station, destined to become the world’s tallest metro station at 74 meters. Conceptualized by the renowned American firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) – the masterminds behind the Burj Khalifa, New York’s Olympic Tower, and Chicago’s Sears Tower – the station features a striking golden cylindrical façade with intricate detailing. Designed to seamlessly integrate into Dubai’s urban landscape and embody the “Dubai – Gateway to the Future” vision, this majestic station will handle up to 160,000 passengers daily initially, with ridership expected to exceed 70,000 per day by 2040.

Before the ceremony, Sheikh Mohammed viewed a poignant historical exhibition dedicated to the vision of his late father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The display featured rare archival photographs, documenting Sheikh Rashid’s international visits and particularly his trip to the UK, where the dream of establishing a similar metro system in Dubai was first inspired.

Stretching 30 kilometers and featuring 14 stations, the Blue Line will be served by 28 modern trains. It will connect nine key districts projected to house over one million residents by 2040 under Dubai’s urban development plan. This expansion will significantly boost Dubai’s overall metro network, increasing its total length to 131 kilometers and the number of stations to 78.

The line’s impact will be substantial: trains are projected to carry 46,000 passengers per hour in both directions, with daily ridership reaching 200,000 by 2030. Crucially, the Blue Line is expected to reduce road traffic congestion by approximately 20%, offering a vital sustainable transport alternative.

With a total construction cost of AED 20.5 billion, the project has been awarded to a consortium of leading Turkish and Chinese companies: Mapa, Limak, and CRRC. The Blue Line is a strategic infrastructure pillar, directly supporting the goals outlined in Dubai’s Urban Master Plan 2040, ensuring the emirate continues to grow as a model of efficient, future-ready urban living. This new artery promises to reshape commutes and further solidify Dubai’s position as a global leader in innovative city planning.
