Dubai’s Landmark Fountain Plaza Undergoes Major Transformation

Dubai’s iconic dancing fountain, the centerpiece of the plaza facing the Dubai Mall, has been closed for renovation until October 2025. This musical water spectacle is one of the city’s most recognizable symbols.

In a significant visual change, the vast artificial lake at the foot of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper has been completely drained. Approximately 30 acres of water were pumped out, fundamentally altering the appearance of this central tourist attraction while major works proceed.

To maintain visitor appeal in the downtown area during the fountain’s absence, developer Emaar Properties is installing 500 meters of digital screens along the waterfront promenade near Dubai Mall and Souk Al Bahar. These screens will display visual content and create a vibrant atmosphere to compensate for the missing fountain shows.

Recognizing the financial impact on businesses with lake views, Emaar has also granted more than 50 restaurants and cafes a rent-free period from June through September. This “rent holiday” aims to help these establishments offset losses anticipated due to reduced tourist traffic during the renovation.

Mohamed Alabbar, Founder of Emaar, emphasized the fountain’s importance: “Over the years, the Dubai Fountain and the surrounding water bodies have played a vital role in the popularity of this area,” he stated, underscoring its contribution to the downtown district’s appeal.

The renovation project, scheduled for completion by October, encompasses comprehensive upgrades. This includes renewing the fountain’s technical infrastructure, enhancing water jet choreography, and modernizing the integrated light and sound systems.

Originally created by Emaar and designed by WET Design – the studio behind the famous Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas – the Dubai Fountain opened in 2009 after development began in 2005, marking nearly two decades as a key downtown landmark.
