Dubai Malls Swap Shopping Bags for Running Shoes in Month-Long “Mallathon”
Forget early bird sales – this summer, Dubai’s mega-malls are opening their doors for a different kind of morning rush. In a novel initiative Mallathon designed to beat the heat and boost public health, seven of the emirate’s largest shopping centres are temporarily transforming into expansive fitness hubs for the month of August.
Spearheaded by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, the “Dubai Mallathon” aims to encourage residents to maintain an active lifestyle during the sizzling summer months.
From August 1st to 31st, iconic malls including Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Hills Mall, Dubai Marina Mall, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, and Springs Souk will be fitted with dedicated walking and running tracks. The smart move? These tracks will be operational from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM daily – before the malls officially open for retail business, offering a cool, air-conditioned alternative to outdoor exercise in the peak summer heat.
Residents of all ages, including children and mall employees, are invited to participate. Registration is completely free and can be done through a dedicated website. Think of it as a month-long community fitness festival happening right in the heart of Dubai’s retail landscape.
But it’s more than just tracks. The malls will feature designated stretching zones, children’s play areas, and fitness stations where participants can check vital health metrics. Partner retailers and restaurants within the malls are also getting in on the act, rolling out special healthy lifestyle offers and promotions.
The initiative is a collaborative effort, receiving backing from the UAE Ministry of Defence and the Dubai Sports Council. Sheikh Hamdan expressed confidence that the Mallathon will significantly contribute to bringing Dubai residents closer to achieving their health and wellness goals.
This unique blend of fitness and commerce aligns with broader national and local strategies. The Dubai Mallathon is officially part of implementing the UAE’s “Year of Communities” and the ambitious “Dubai Social Agenda 33,” both focused on enhancing community well-being and social cohesion.
So, this August, Dubai’s famed shopping paradises are trading the soundtrack of tills for the rhythm of running shoes, marrying retail with recreation in a bold push for a healthier city. Lace up, Dubai – the Mallathon awaits.
