Imke Abma Rides for Hope on Tour de France’s Charity Stage

While elite cyclists battle for the yellow jersey in the women’s Tour de France, another remarkable team is pedaling for a different prize: a cure for childhood blood cancer. Among the 16 women in this unique international charity peloton, one rider carries the flag for the UAE: 48-year-old Ras Al Khaimah resident Imke Abma.

Abma isn’t racing for medals; she’s riding every stage of the iconic race to raise awareness and crucial funds for Cure Leukaemia, a UK-based charity supporting children with blood cancers worldwide. Her motivation is deeply personal. She experienced the devastating loss of a close relative of her husband to leukaemia. Furthermore, her own daughter, Mary, faced a severe congenital heart condition, undergoing major surgery in Singapore at just seven months old. Now 11 and healthy, Mary’s journey is a testament to resilience – a resilience Abma credits partly to the overwhelming support her family received from the UAE community.

Abma’s cycling journey began just three years ago as a fitness pursuit. It quickly evolved into participation in triathlons and even qualification for the Gran Fondo World Championships in Scotland. For her, cycling transformed into a powerful tool for inspiration – encouraging other women and families to embrace the sport and unite for meaningful causes.

Inspired by the Ride For Unity movement, which uses cycling to bring people together, Abma joined the Cure Leukaemia charity ride tackling the Tour de France route. Her preparation showcased incredible determination: she conquered the ascent of Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak, seven times in a single day – cumulatively climbing the equivalent height of Mount Everest.

Family remains central to Abma’s endeavor. Her husband actively supports her ambitions, and during the grueling Tour stages, he and Mary follow her progress across France in a campervan. For Abma, this project transcends a monumental athletic challenge. It’s a platform to amplify the urgent need for research into childhood leukaemia treatments. She firmly believes that the combined power of unwavering spirit, the support of loved ones, and collective unity can profoundly change lives for the better. As she rides through the French landscapes, Imke Abma carries not just the hopes of her nation, but the hopes of countless children battling cancer.
