Unexpected Summer Rains in the UAE Explained
While the United Arab Emirates continues to experience extreme summer heat, with temperatures recently reaching 50°C (122°F) in Al Dhafra, an unusual weather phenomenon has drawn attention—regular rainfall in Al Ain and the country’s eastern regions. Meteorologists from the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) have explained the science behind these unexpected downpours.
According to the NCM, the rains are caused by atmospheric processes over the Arabian Sea. Moist air from the southeast, carrying evaporated seawater, moves toward the UAE’s eastern coast, where it meets the Hajar Mountains. As the humid air rises and cools over the mountains, it forms convective clouds, leading to rainfall. This explains why Al Ain, with its mountainous terrain, often experiences rain even during peak summer.
Another contributing factor is the intense daytime heat, which creates strong upward air currents, further aiding cloud formation. While such rains are not entirely unusual for Al Ain, their frequency and intensity have sparked interest amid record-breaking temperatures.
2025 has already seen historic heat, with April and May being the hottest ever recorded in the UAE. Experts attribute this to global climate shifts and the end of the El Niño phase, which has altered moisture circulation in the region. Despite the scorching conditions, these localized rains provide temporary relief, showcasing the UAE’s diverse and dynamic weather patterns.
